Feelgood

Because everyone loves a feelgood moment

The most common type of group on Geneva using the location features are wellness groups. These communities range from workout clubs, to mental health groups, to menstrual care support groups; but all of them are uniquely tight-knit. The Feelgood campaign was an opportunity to celebrate those groups and share their stories. It was also an opportunity to reflect our values as a company. : we believe that feeling good, safe, and heard are all important factors in a healthy community.


This was a video-first campaign with a full video shoot of each group, much like the spring campaign. The idea of the campaign started with one question: What makes you feel good? Concepts like intimacy, acceptance, and relatability drove decision-making for every aspect of the creative process. We utilized ASMR-inspired ambient audio and close-up visual textures to create intimacy. We played with framing to create “windows” into the groups, which allowed for more relatability. All of these ideas came together to support the tagline for the campaign: Find your feelgood.

Brand DesignSince all of the content was video-first, visual design played a more “small and mighty” role throughout the campaign. We focused on color and type to compliment the video content, weaving in Geneva brand mainstays like abstracted UI moments and pops of color.

We also found an opportunity to make some physical items in the midst of this digital-heavy campaign. We designed a campaign-specific shirt as well as a zine called the Feelgood Files, inspired by the are.na annual. The zine includes stories, advice, and activities from some wellness groups we love on Geneva, as a way to bridge the gap between the digital and IRL.

Digital MarketingPaid digital marketing utilized boosted posts, traditional digital marketing, and organic partnerships to spark conversations around wellness communities and communicate that Geneva is the perfect place to find your group.

We prioritized organic and paid social for the Feelgood campaign. There was a larger emphasis on creator partnerships (organic and paid) across Instagram and TikTok than we had tried in the past, and it paid off. We shared “designed” content organically and in sync with the groups that were highlighted to get maximum organic reach. For paid, we created variations of the videos in smaller bites for Instagram and TikTok, as well as content partners sharing boosted content on their channels. ︎

Our next campaign was about emphasizing Geneva’s support of location-based IRL groups on the app. After noticing an increased number location-specific groups being created, we pivoted as a company and embraced a new short-hand for our IRL efforts: online to offline.


The goal for this campaign was part exposure, part geo-targeted downloads. Our strategy was to target a handful of cities where there were already successful IRL groups on the app, and saturate those cities’ digital markets with our new messaging.


We organized another photoshoot for this campaign and experiment with a more etherial, aspirational version of our brand. The design direction and styling was inspired by soft textures, 90s inspirational posters, hyperfemme contemporary art, and the @subwayhands account on IG.

Digital Marketing

The content created was shot specifically to be used as stop-motion photography for ads on social media. The consistent storyline went from the perspective of a user going from online to offline. We created some variety in the specific paths the user takes in that journey so that we could experiment and test as we ran the campaign.&#38;nbsp;︎

The goal of Geneva’s first marketing campaign was to introduce the product to a larger audience as a more unified brand. We tapped into the pool of unique groups already using Geneva and highlighted their stories to tell ours: This is where your group chats.

Each of the highlighted groups was the subject of a photo and video shoot. We curated props and styling to play on their group’s niche, and placed them in a grass and sky set — a motif we would regularly use in Geneva branding. Geneva is the place, and your group is at home here.

The visual design concept was what we called a “digital collage”: creating depth by layering of screens, chat bubbles, emoji reactions, and other online motifs. It was important to introduce Geneva using online and offline references as these were the shifting goals of the company as a whole.

IRL
Out of Home was our main touchpoint for this campaign. Bringing the digital into the physical world was important to us — to communicate that Geneva was for your online and offline life. We created 6 billboards and a smattering of wheatepaste coverage all around NYC.

Digital Marketing
Our digital marketing primarily consisted of a variety of cuts from the hero video interviews and testimonials from the group photoshoot. We celebrated this brand moment organically, shared BTS footage, and tagged all the users involved for them to also celebrate the success of their groups out in the world. As a bonus, we organically shared a scavenger-hunt for followers to go and find the billboards around NYC to gain organic traction on social media. ︎

I worked pro-bono with a team of advocates to create supplimentary design work for the Free Myon campaign in 2020. We utilized textures and vibrant colors to catch folks’ attention in the crowded online space of Instagram.
On December 15, 2020, Myon’s sentence was commuted from life to 20 years (18 of which he had already served). The Minnesota Board of Pardons ruled that Myon be released immediately; and I’m happy to say he’s been reunited with his family in Minnesota.Learn more about Myon Burrell’s wrongful conviction at MyonBurrell.com.&#38;nbsp;

I had the pleasure of working with the Beekman Social team to create a variety of Instagram campaigns for 7 For All Mankind.

During the early months of covid, many brands were relying on social media as their main connection to customers and audiences. While at Beekman Social, we were constantly pushing through the noise of Instagram to create beautiful and authentic organic content for 7.&#38;nbsp;
With everyone so chronically online, it felt essential to embrace tangible textures and themes, even if you’re still viewing it on a screen. I experimented a lot with 7’s social presence to deliver content that was high-design, but with a lo-fi vibe. The visual language ranged from clean lines to imperfect edges with ragged movement and organic textures.

Working with the team at Beekman Social, I was able to develop my hands-on animation skills to create simple and effective movement on screen that maintained alignment with the brand.

We created a lot of care-related content for 7, which was a wonderful opportunity to push tangibility even further with hand-drawn assets, creating everything from scratch.&#38;nbsp;︎

The Hub

The Hub, also known as H Collective, needed some help getting their many online touchpoints up to date with a recent brand refresh. I had the pleasure of working with the start-up team to catch them up visually and streamline some of their design processes.

I designed some new job post templates for the internal team to use to reach The Hub’s 135k Instagram followers, keeping them up to date and engaged with the job board.&#38;nbsp;Some posts were aimed at creators freelancing on The Hub, and some to new clients looking to hire. The drastic audience split was a challenge for us getting started, but we were able to streamline the design language to hit two birds with one stone.

Along with updated branding, I was able to help The Hub redesign and systemize their website’s case studies with clean and energetic photo layouts that were future-proof. The Hub moves so fast that streamlining the process of creating these case-studies was very important for the longevity of the designs themselves.

I was able to flexed my baby animation muscles to create some headers for automated e-mails to clients and freelancers, creating a sense of excitement for first-time clients and freelancers alike.&#38;nbsp;︎

While at Knorth Studios, I worked closely with Ruby Coffee Roasters on various brand projects as they continued to grow as a roastery. This included packaging, merch, and signage for their brand new cafe in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

Ruby Roasters is known as an ethical roastery in the coffee world, and had found their niche in quality-driven cafes in the US. While the company was growing quickly and selling primarily online, it was time for a brand refresh that would be able to grow with them. This started primarily with the packaging, the most important point of contact for customers.

We designed a new biodegradable package system for their coffee, incorporating hand-drawn textures and minimal text to reflect the inspiration that Owner Jared drew from their rural home-base: Nelsonville, Wisconsin. 
The rough, parallel lines represented the flow of water in the area, as well as the rolling hills and sudden changes in elevation in this unique area of the midwest. We also wanted to reflect the quiet quality that Ruby offers by utilizing negative space wherever possible, letting the logomark shine on the front of the package. We also created&#38;nbsp;a unique color system, a la “Colorful Coffees”, to distinguish different roasts, countries of origin, and farms.

We were able to continue the brand refresh by designing the external signage, food and drink menus, and other little items in the space that would lend itself to Ruby Cafe’s warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Over the course of my time at Knorth, I was able to team up with the Ruby team and create some fun merch items like waterbottles, coffee mugs, tumblers, sweatshirts, tees, totes... all the goodies.&#38;nbsp;︎

While nationally known for the unique Summer Shandy, Leinenkugel’s maintains a hearty midwestern pride when it comes to the core of their company. They still do the majority of their brewing at the original brewery in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. While at Knorth Studios, we teamed up with the crew at Leinie Lodge to execute the look and feel for their weekly e-blasts, run full photoshoots, support their ecommerce, and create assets for their social media platforms.

We created new content for the Leinie Lodge on a weekly basis, challenging ourselves to push the limits of the Leinenkugel’s brand. We executed photoshoots from start to finish–concept out the sale, plan the photoshoot, hire models, scout locations, and then style and shoot the products together on site. Owning these projects from start to finish ensured a high quality result that we were proud to share.

I worked closely with photographer Christopher Bartlett to capture the products and models in a way that would best represent the Leinenkugel’s brand: outdoors, active, and always having a good time.&#38;nbsp;

In addition to e-blasts, we shot and edited product photos for the Leinenkugel’s webstore. We created a guide to be used for all product photos from then on, taking into account the variety of item sizes and shapes.&#38;nbsp;︎

Another year of the Eaux Claires Music Festival, another year of experiments. We channeled our inner rebels to attempt support a bold new approach to a festival: no lineup announcements before the festival. We worked intimately with the Eaux Claires team Michael Brown, Michael Perry, Justin Vernon, Aaron Dessner, and Mary Hickson to support this bold new idea with branding, marketing,  installations, merch, and environmental design. IV was an attempt to change the idea of a festival to something less concrete and sometime more fluid.

We started in November — T-minus 8 months to the fest —  with a guerrilla-style marketing campaign focused hyper-locally, right in the city of Eau Claire. Our visual language utilized collage and lo-fi distortion; embracing the tangible feeling of existing in real life, the messiness and imperfections of it. We would go on to push the boundaries of this language as we explored the deconstruction of the festival.
We designed and installed a 27’ wide wheatepaste in downtown Eau Claire, where we knew it would be seen and inspected. We went live on Instagram to make sure the rest of the world knew. The two-part wheatepaste release advertised an Eaux Claires podcast, teasing specific artists and creating some mystery around what was to come. The next day, we released the dates of IV on a second layer of wheatepaste, playing on hype, the importance of time and place, and impermanence.

Marketing pushes were organic, designed to create a buzz, and mostly traveled by word of mouth within the community. We made it a point to utilize physical marketing opportunities, like taking out full page ads in Volume One, the Chippewa Valley local weekly.

The merch for IV — proudly printed locally by Knorth’s sister company, Ambient Inks — is designer’s dream each year. Our team always manages to have a blast creating and capturing the merch. We extended IV’s visual language of collage and lo-fi, tangible textures and extended that to more unexpected content. We pulled quotes from the Eaux Claires podcast and always-introspective musings of festival narrator, Michael Perry to use text as a texture in the pieces.

Other than our branding duties for IV, we had a special opportunity this year to really get hands-on with the festival grounds. We designed signage, badges, credentials, and a Field Guide-style program for the festival.
We had the pleasure of designing and installing a full wheatepasted design over Ben Krall’s beautiful structure on the House of Vans and stage. We covered the stage 100% utilizing collage, texture, and distortion to bring the IV brand to life on the grounds. We couldn’t be more proud of how it turned out, with all the hard work that went into it.

In addition to the House of Vans stage, we installed 2 art pieces on the grounds. Entitled “Winter is Here”, these walls are windows into wintertime on the festival grounds. We wanted it to feel like you could keep walking right through that portals into the winter.&#38;nbsp;
The smaller of the two walls actually included a functional door in the middle of the piece. At certain times, festival goers could sneak through and attend an unofficial dance party on the edge of the grounds. ︎
